ALEX AKUETE

“I want my art and work to ignite conversations and bring people together”
Alex Akuete is a multidisciplinary artist dedicated to directing artistic projects towards connection and revitalisation of people of all ages and backgrounds.
Based in Antwerp, his work has had an impact across painting, design, installation art, performance and community-building while tackling tough themes like racial profiling and segregation. This versatility allows him to effortlessly connect with and design projects that impact diverse groups of people.
As a dancer and choreographer, Alex founded a performance company called HIVE with the aim to redefine performance, its point of orientation and purpose.
Alex Akuete is also the founder of Xray Community, a collective now consisting of more than 100 young artists dedicated to providing young artists with a platform for self-discovery and collaboration while serving as a nurturing space for emerging artists to explore and cultivate their passions.
Alex Akuete is also the cofounder of Wave Together, together with Sara Youkes and Bianca quets Luzi. With the aim to bring young people and organisations closer together through carefully curated conversation.
His university studies led him to London's New Horizon Youth Centre, where he supported young people facing homelessness with art as a medium. It solidified his commitment to art and design as a bridge to empowerment. Collaborating with cultural institutions locally and internationally he has mentored countless young artists, helping them find visibility within the arts scenes.
For Alex, the key aspects of his work involve fostering interpersonal connections and facilitating emotional transformations. He is currently working as the first ever ‘Youth art project director/ Community builder’ in the fashion museum of Antwerp MOMU and Europalia.
Through his works as and art, Alex comments on the ever-evolving dynamics of both his micro and macro environments.
