Hugh Roche Kelly

Hugh Roche Kelly is a woodturner and sculptor making a mixture of decorative interior objects and functional tableware entirely out of locally sourced wood.

Through a long running partnership with the Sonian Coop he enjoys direct access to trees from the Brussels area- primarily old growth beech from the Sonian Forest of Brussels. In transforming this material into final objects the aim is to valorise this local and noble material and to create beautifully designed and realised pieces.

Hugh’s larger objects , such as the wall-hanging "Waves" series using a full cross section of a beech tree, are all the direct result of a dialogue between the artist creating them and the material itself. The result is an expression not just of individual skill and handwork but the result of the many years of growth in the tree itself.

Hugh also presents a range of usable tableware, seeking the same expression of beauty, craft and sustainability but in a practical form. Using high grade finishes that are natural, food safe and long lasting, these products will last longer than a lifetime.

Heirloom quality objects, crafted locally from sustainable material.

Hugh has participated in the CraftHub Eu residence programme (2022), and completed the Artistic Practise for Craft practitioners programme at HDK Valand (University of Gothenburg, 2023). He trained as a woodturner under Glenn Lucas (Ireland) and Giorgio Romani (Italy).
